爱。开心便当のMooncake Festival

The Mooncake Festival, also known as Mid-Autumn Festival, falls on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month which is Sept 22 this year, which is tomorrow.  To celebrate this special day, I made this Mooncake bento for my son this morning.  I made two mooncakes, using rice balls and egg sheets.

To make the mooncake rice ball, first, put a piece of cyling wrap on top of a bowl.  Then put the egg sheet as the mooncake skin on the top of it. Put in some rice as the mooncake paste. After that, I put some meat floss in the center of the rice as the egg yolk in the mooncake. Then, put another layer of rice to cover the meat floss.  Use the cyling wrap to roll the rice ball and the egg sheet to become a ball and press to flatten the ball just like a piece of mooncake.  Then, use a flower cutter to cut out a flower from a piece of ham and use a straw to put holes on the ham. Place the ham on the mooncake rice ball and decorated with cheese alphabets “MOONCAKE”.  I put some sausage pieces into the second rice ball.

There are fried drummet, some broccoli, lettuce and some black grapes.  I used two ring food picks for two grapes to make them as lanterns to complete the bento.

Mooncakes are also known as “reunion cakes” as family members gather to partake of the sweet confectionery.  Mooncakes are eaten throughout the month before the actual festival day. They make meaningful gifts for kith and kin.

In the evenings, children gleefully carry lanterns of all shapes and sizes. The bearing of lanterns and the origin of mooncakes date back to a 14th century revolt by the Chinese against the Mongols.

This week is full of joy, besides we are celebrating Mooncake Festival, one of my bento pal is celebrating her #200 bento post. She is Alice and her blog Bento Fun. She is a wonderful mum and a creative bento maker.  Her bento ideas inspired me a lot!!  In her #200 post, she is having a giveway to celebrate this special moment with other bento pals. So, what are you waiting for…quick..enter to her blog and join in the giveaway. 😉  Congratulations to Bento Fun!!!

“Happy Mooncake Festival” to all my friend and family, and all bento pals here too. 🙂
